London Ghetto: ...on a sunny warm day went to make photos of London vistas, but instead was herded 3hrs without water, toilet, nor shelter from sun... Bank undergraound station iron gates closed & guarded... not Germany 1930's, nor Warsaw 1940's, but London 2009...
...the man wearing orange safety jacket and hat on bottom right, sitting on a Keep-Left bollard and with soiled jeans seemed more like an 'entrapped' builder than part of the procession... the female sitting below him with her cycle also finding space to sit can be seen in another photo below looking at the A-Z of London..but no where to go ! ... people in foreground wait, sit and even some sleep, not in protest but like everyone...waiting, resting & wondering what is happening...
...looking the other way...again people can be seen wondering & sitting not knowing how long this will go on & seeking where to exist... the narrow streets make for the police as did the old narrow streets of the Paris of 1871 for the Revolutionaries... easy to block off..
.... on 1st April in the centre of london in the middle of abright sunny day...a true Ghetto had formed... no water, no toilet facilities, no shelter from the elements and no medical personnel nor anyone in uniform within the ghetto area... a true ghetto had formed outside the normal laws of civil society.... in its first moments I wondered what wa shappening, afetr some minutes I flet that this must have been what it was like in those first few moments when people were 'ghettoed' in Poland in 1940's and after a couple of hours this sense of 'unknowing' really fuelled my imagination and empathic awareness and took me more into those thoughts... albeit reassuring myself that those historical precedences were in a different context and the outcomes today would never be so final...I was leaving Liverpool Street Rail Station from Norwich on my walk to the Embankment to ake photos of London v vistas and happen to see a procession of people pass as I was leaving the station.. so I asked where they were going and joined to make photos of them as I walked part of my walks in london central areas... but upon entering the front of Bank of England the procession stopped ...
...some gain height wherever they can to look and see why the procession has stopped... it seemed illogical to me to stop the procession outside Bank of England...just the place it would seem to me to 'inflame' any hot-headed individual !!! .... the Bank underground station iron gates were closed, locked and guarded... and all streets from this point blocked by a double row of armoured police & behind them vans backed blocking also & ready....
...no answers were given me by any of these officers to my requests to exist and leave as an individual... there were no medical personnelnor anyone in uniform within the area blocked... no water, no toilet facilities (Bank underground station entrance closed, locked & guarded from station side), no shelter from the elements, from the the heat the sun that spring day... a true 'Ghetto', a place outside the rules and laws of normal civil society had formed... and no knowledge for how long this was to continue...
...reading A-Z of London..but no where to go !! (permssion given by her to publish close up portrait) ..she can also happen to be seen in top photo at bottom right of image... sitting waiting....
...likewise, this Canary theatrical exhibition looks for exists to carry on walking the streets of London as part of their planned live Exhibition.... but so too unable to find an exist....
..people can be seen wondering in all directions... looking for where to go... and the mass media everwhere gaining their shots among this 'captive' shoot...
